Thin Gauge Welding: Burn-Through Prevention and Heat Control

Thin gauge welding requires minimal heat input through short-circuit transfer, reduced wire diameter (0.6-0.8mm), and low CO2 gas content to prevent burn-through on materials under 2mm thickness. CORGON® S5 provides optimal low-heat characteristics while maintaining adequate penetration and fusion.

Thin Material Welding Setup

  1. Wire Size Reduction. Use 0.6-0.8mm wire for materials under 1.5mm thickness. Smaller wire allows lower current operation.
  2. Low Heat Input Parameters. Voltage 15-18V, wire feed 2-4 m/min. Travel speed 150-250mm/min to prevent excessive heat buildup.
  3. Gas Selection. CORGON® S5 (5% CO2) reduces heat input compared to standard CORGON® 18. Lower spatter reduces cleanup requirements.

CORGON® S5 (Ar + 5% CO2)

Why CORGON® S5 perfect for thin gauge: Minimal CO2 content reduces heat input while maintaining good wetting. Smooth arc characteristics prevent burn-through on sensitive thin materials.
