Heavy Plate Welding: High Penetration Gas Selection

Heavy plate welding over 25mm thickness requires high CO2 content gases like CORGON® 25 for maximum penetration, combined with spray transfer and multi-pass techniques for efficient joint completion. Proper preheating and interpass temperature control become critical for crack prevention in thick sections.

Heavy Plate Welding Parameters

  1. High-Penetration Gas. Use CORGON® 25 (75% Ar + 25% CO2) for deep penetration. Higher CO2 content increases arc force and penetration.
  2. Spray Transfer Mode. Mandatory for productivity on thick plates. Use 250-400A current with appropriate wire feed speeds.
  3. Preheating Requirements. Preheat 150-200°C for thick carbon steel to prevent cracking and improve ductility.

CORGON® 25 (Ar + 25% CO2)

Why CORGON® 25 essential for heavy plate: Maximum CO2 content in CORGON® range provides deepest penetration for thick section welding. Essential for single-pass penetration and sidewall fusion in heavy plate applications.
