Purging Setup

Pipe Diameter Flow Rate Purge Time Monitoring
25-50mm 5-8 L/min 10-15 min O₂ meter required
50-100mm 8-15 L/min 15-25 min O₂ < 50 ppm target
100-200mm 15-25 L/min 25-40 min O₂ < 20 ppm for critical work
200mm+ 25-40 L/min 40-60 min Continuous monitoring required

Setup Instructions

  1. Install purge dams or inflatable plugs to contain atmosphere
  2. Connect FORMIER supply to inlet end with appropriate flow control
  3. Install oxygen monitoring probe at exit end
  4. Begin purging at 125% of calculated flow rate
  5. Monitor oxygen levels until target purity is achieved
  6. Maintain flow during welding and cooling cycle
  7. Continue purge until weld temperature drops below 400°C

Comparison with Alternatives

FORMIER® vs Pure Nitrogen

Pure Nitrogen

When to use pure nitrogen: Titanium welding, reactive metal applications, or when hydrogen content must be zero.

FORMIER advantage: Active reduction capability removes existing oxides, better root penetration, and superior root quality on stainless steels. The hydrogen component provides cleaning action that pure nitrogen cannot achieve.

FORMIER® vs Pure Argon Backing

Feature FORMIER® Pure Argon Advantage
Oxide Reduction Active None Removes existing contamination
Cost per Volume Lower Higher Nitrogen base reduces cost
Penetration Enhancement Yes Limited Hydrogen improves fusion
Application Range Stainless, Nickel All metals Specialized for reactive metals
